I’m sure that all of us, over time, have created a certain combination of software and hardware that helped us create our art. I’ve been using an all-in-one media creation/design package for years, both for personal projects and for client work. That software is Adobe Photoshop CS5. I’m enjoying the new Creative Cloud package for what it does and the features it offers, but there are still good reasons to prefer ToC, so I’m going to walk you through the benefits of Linux and my favorite apps.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 is a powerful, stable, efficient application. I’ve been using it on Linux for years now, and I can’t imagine using any other application for my digital art. It’s what I use to produce video and images for my site, and I use it as my primary editing and organizing package.

But Photoshop CS5 is different. I’ve played with the new features for a while now, and my experience is really positive. This is a great Photoshop application, and it’s easy to work with. With that said, there are a couple of things that are still problematic.

The paintbrush tools can be tricky to use. It shouldn’t be like this, and neither should the file management tools. So far, I haven’t yet found anything that can replace the functions of the addition of the liquify filter. Once again, this is a feature that should be included in every application.

Photoshop is created to work in layers, whereas Lightroom works in groups of adjustments.

Where is the best place to find out how to make your photos look better? If Lightroom is not intuitive enough, is Photoshop more suitable? To illustrate the benefit of learning Lightroom first, which includes learning the workflow, I have used Photoshop skillfully at work for years and made great successes in my career. At home, I don’t hesitate to use Photoshop. Regardless of what I do, the editing I am doing in Lightroom is still based on my earlier experiences, so it is difficult for me to move to the Photoshop. Of course, I still do get some better results for my shooting with Photoshop than I do in Lightroom.

The special property of a shape layer allow it to be non-interactive with the other layers. You can even add more curves to it and manipulate that collection. The shape layer itself can’t be moved. And for every change done to it, it will have no effect to the raster layer. The performance is excellent.
However, there are a few glitches that have cropped up.

Even though the interface is an absolute pleasure to work with, it’s a bit on the likeable side of things. It does have one very distinct mishap though: the “Print” menu item is just thrown in there without any thought on its placement or any possible benefits to the user who might want to use it. It’s a bit of an eyesore.
Finally, there’s the Darkroom mode. It’s really how you get to see how a photo will look like when shot on your camera,
with some other options thrown in, such as the reverse grid. Adobe is still giving it that old-school feel to it.

One of them, Retouch, is a new set of virtual tools for cropping, rotating, and other basic retouching tasks, such as fixing problems with perspective, brightness, and so on. Another update, CS4 Workflow, is a collection of features that let you do things in a different way. This means you can load images quickly, select them all at once, and then apply the standard filter or correction tools to all selected photos. However, it can be a bit tricky to figure out how all the new features fit together, but power users will like it. Lightroom 4 can also manage JPEGs (the RAW format), TIFFs and SDIs. It’s also the best tool to work with JPEGs (during and after conversion to RAW).

Well, it is time to consider what is good about the software or the subscription. Is the subscription really worth it? I evaluated the pros and cons before buying. By far the most significant pro is the huge set of free downloadable content. I mean content that you can actually use without paying each month.

Now for the cons: I have been a loyal user of Elements for the longest time, but the transition to the subscription was not very smooth as it was not identical to Lightroom. Depending on the computer system, the process of data backups can be time-consuming and even downright impossible due to certain restrictions in the transfer. I was baffled to find out that since the 2nd version of Elements 7, it is not possible to import video files, including home videos, while the maximum file size per picture is 1080p MP4 recorders, which is not even close to 4K resolution. Secondly, it took an hour for Photoshop Elements to import just a single picture. So far, I have not experienced any technical issues that could be associated with my PC.

Moreover, I have to confess that some features that I love dearly are not available on the subscription. One of the most useful ones for me is Smart Cleaning. With every new version of Photoshop Elements, Adobe continues to improve the image quality and dramatically enhance the speed of operations.

In the image below, you’ll see two versions of Photoshop. The top version is the free version of Photoshop (downloading solid results, but minimal). Most people make a mistake with the free version of Photoshop. Not only does the image appear to be too soft, it does not have any options for content retouching or advanced editing (e.g. adding shadows, text, and gradients).
