In 1969, they produced 48 Indonesian films. In 1976, this number reached to 100 (Oka, 1994). This rising number of films inspired independent filmmakers to make their own movies.
So far the industry has produced about 80,000-100,000 Indonesian films from 1963 to 2014. However, new sound technology has been able to blur the boundary between film and video, thus making the use of more than one medium (films and video) has become possible. With this film-video-telephone-spaceship-intergalactic-cable-vision system, the value of the industry has increased and they started to reap profits.
After the development of video, the number of films still remain high. This is because it is still the main source of information and education, especially for the daily updates from the government. The term film industry refers to all of the companies and people who are involved in making and distributing cinema in Indonesia.
Mass media in Indonesia have a great role in the promotion of cinema. Both TV and newspaper have been used to help with the distribution of films by bringing the films to the masses. The first of the mass media, television, was established in 1938 (Balungan 1986 Balungan, Allan W. 1986. Since the establishment of the TVRI network, especially in recent years, television has become the second contributor of films. This is due to the tremendous growth of the program Indonesia Raya (Indonesia Today) on TVRI. In addition, there are many other show that make use of television. “Buku Malaysia”, a comedy drama series is the flagship of television. Due to this, the type of films made for television has become more and more entertaining. Moreover, dramas are also a common thing, especially on TVRI and TVRI HARYATI.

At one time, then, Indonesian horror films appeared as an isolated genre rather than that they are part of a wider phenomenon which arguably is the horror film worldwide. The relationship of the Indonesian horror film to the international market is problematic. For example, Dark Eye was not originally released in Indonesian cinemas, although the negative reaction of the audiences in Jakarta prompted the producers to release it in cinemas, and to remove the more explicit scenes for release in Indonesia. The relationship of the Indonesian horror film to the national market is equally problematic. For example, the generally poor reviews which Dark Eye received after the release in Indonesia were masked by the positive reactions to it in other parts of the world, which means that there was little feedback in Indonesia. Presumably, the audiences in Indonesia did not find the film to be particularly frightening. They did find it interesting in that they did not have to endure the same kinds of discomforts and problems which arise from Western horror films which were shown alongside the Indonesian horror film. This kind of feedback would seem to be important in relation to trying to define what is the Indonesian horror film. The audience response in Indonesia does not tell us about the Indonesian audience which in many ways wants to be like the Western audience, at least in regards to their tastes in film. The influence of local folklore and mythology, especially in relation to death and morality is obviously important. An equally interesting question is why there is such a contrast between the international and national market in Indonesia. Clearly, there is a wider market for horror films than just those intended for the Indonesian market. For example, it is obvious that mainstream Asian cinemas are attempting to increase the sales of horror films which can be exported to other territories. Furthermore, the use of eroticism in horror films is not solely a feature of the Indonesian market. How many Indonesian horror films actually depict sex scenes. It would seem that the Indonesian horror film does have a significant market internationally.
