With a new version, updates have been doing a needed and long overdue cleanup of the product’s slower parts. Adobe’s lackluster Healing Brush has been improved to provide more accurate results, which can only be a good thing. Even with this tweak, however, if you use this brush with raw, cropped or graduated images, you may experience mild delete/replace cycles with shrunken parts of an image. That’s to be expected, as the blue box is the brush’s measuring space. I don’t think it is a usability mistake and those in the know will be quick to point out that the tool is far from being perfect. Set it too light, for example, and you will most likely get results that look horrific. If you are healing pictures of one person or a few people in a couple of locations, I suggest you use the Content Aware Spot Healing tool. It is much faster and less likely to make such mistakes. If you need to process large batches of raw images, it is better just to use Photoshop’s Content Aware Fill or CLIP ART. If you have a high-end computer, consider compiling some brushes to extend the brush’s applicability. I’m not sure if users who resort to batch processing to get good jobs have a need for a separate brushes library in Photoshop. After all, I find that those good enough staples are also in the user-created brushes library.

There is also better Lightroom integration for Photoshop’s own efficiency. I am sure it was NOT a mistake to have Lightroom and Photoshop integrators so closely modeled. One of my complaints is that Lightroom is easier to access for some advanced users who want to move between the two applications. To me, this is a mistake. The user interface in Lightroom is too bloated for power users. It’s not unusual to open the Save dialog when editing a RAW image from Lightroom, then access Photoshop’s much improved File>Save As >File, Pick a Folder menu. If you do not want to use Photoshop’s native menus, you can always open connections in the preferences dialog. So much for the multi-threading.

When working with RAW files, the automatic adjustment tools in Lightroom never properly seem to work for me. This may be partially due to the fact that I often work with only a few “nice” RAW files and have pretty rough image files when it comes to exposure and white balance. Still, I found that Lightroom tended to be quite finicky about what did and did not appear to work. For example, I ran into a problem with oddly appearing parts of the RAW file that I had not touched. I would go through the process of adjusting a setting, and then all of the sudden the image would be even worse than before. I would use Lightroom to make adjustments, only to find that I could not undo them. In such cases, I would dive back into the image editing software and reset the image to a state that was somewhat sane. I call this a “celebration dance,” since I felt like I was dancing with Lightroom.

Photoshop CS7 will deliver performance improvements and expand capabilities for rigid format tasks beyond native file formats CS6 introduced. In addition to improving these support features for web formats, the ability to create and edit robust web assets with robust plugins will become available. As web-browsers and platforms adopt CS6 Web Metadata or the upcoming WebP as support for native file formats, Photoshop will be able to create in native web formats.

There are two new Adjustment Layers that make it easy to experiment with the color of an image without having to dive into the color inspector and dive into the settings. These new Adjustment Layers let you pull, push and blend RGB and HSL values.
