This makes switching tools a simple matter of setting an image in one tool and applying the same settings to other images.

It’s hard to believe that Photoshop is now in its 21st year of existence. When it debuted with Photoshop 1.0 for Macintosh on September 23, 1994, digital raster graphics (DNG) were just emerging as a viable format for storing images. The idea of an alias image file for RAW files, also known as a DNG, was introduced to Adobe in 1998, although they didn’t actually use that name for it until 2010. And despite Photoshop CS2’s insistence that DNGs were to be avoided, they still support DNG since CS2. Thus, today’s photography workflow favors DNGs, as the file format used by Lightroom, Photoshop, and ImageReady is DNG.

The best way to use Photoshop is to learn to use the toolbar. You can click on the small Toolbar icon in the top-right corner of the Photoshop window and then select from the menu that drops down. This allows you to select a tool from the menu to quickly apply it to the object in the image. For example, the Pen tool allows you to draw on a canvas. The Brush tool allows you to paint on a canvas. The Brush tool gives you a variation of options that I’ll go into more detail about later. The Crop tool allows you to scale an image so that the selection area is the same in both dimensions. If you’d like to create a new layer, which is a different image layer, you can click on the New Layer icon in the top-left corner of the Photoshop window.

The beta version of Photoshop includes all the most promising features of the app, and even a few things we didn’t expect. It starts with the most basic of features — a cursor that lets you edit image files directly in the browser. The biggest surprise is that you can do all of this without losing the power of Photoshop. The beta version even includes the ability to import and export RAW file formats — like those used by professional camera systems like Panasonic and Sony.

The main reason for creating the beta is to enable more people to try out the software, and feedback from them will help us create the next version of Photoshop. That said, the beta is available for Windows, macOS, and even Linux systems. So, even if you are on a different operating system, you can still try Photoshop without using a Windows computer. And if you want to work on a specific operating system, you can either use Chrome on an Apple machine or Chrome on a Windows machine.

Finally, Adobe announced a timeline for the new multithread compositing engine that will power Photoshop in all Adobe apps. I agree with your objection to the “all or nothing” approach towards PP. I much prefer the M6’s “Camera Calibration” mode, but you can’t use it in most Photoshop shots. I ended up using it as the “baseline” to adjust the D800’s 16-bit LrMk5 settings and then “enabling” the PtlMk5 in the CmdLk5 editor.

When I do PP shots of my kids and family I’m impressed with their digital lifestyle where they are likely more interested in their own social media instead of a camera. I wonder if the rest of us are missing out on some valuable learning opportunities. A real-world experience is a multi-dimensional thing that you learn from in a much larger way than from viewing a still shot on a computer screen. I’ve slowed down my intake of “stuff” so that I can concentrate on experiences that give me something to write about. I would like to be in a position where I’m still doing some pix but I’m directing my attention and energy elsewhere.

It exposes raw files, makes great-looking images, and lets photographers share these images from the places they’ve been.
