While I thoroughly enjoyed XML edits under Lightroom 4, it was really hard to work with them until it was adopted by PhotoKit. But from once PhotoKit support arrived, Lightroom 5 has added XML-based edits that greatly extend its editing capabilities. They include some new actions (see the second paragraph of this review for details), the ability to quickly apply and remove a standard color profile, and the capability to apply the same edits (or use them the same way) on multiple images. It’s not that surprising that XML edits have been turned on as a standard feature. Hardware acceleration could really be much faster than it ever has been. Even the latest CS4 beta was basically unusably slow on the same hardware due to the fact that the JavaScript engine never shut the hell up. That’s why I’ve been recommending to people to wait for Lightroom to hit the GPU in the next version, and for the same reason I’ll be recommending to people to wait for Lightroom CC too… Although, as far as I can tell, it’s basically the same engine that they’re going to use for all versions of the product. It’s also rather odd that the JavaScript engine is going to remain from CS4 through the next version of Photoshop, even though JavaScript is basically irrelevant to graphics or DNG editing.
