Before I went on, I should clarify that Lightroom will probably be the core of all future Adobe photo editing packages. The bad news is that it is currently somewhat glitchy and not as solid. My guess is that this will be changed in Lightroom 4, but that is a question of a long time. We speak about a year ahead of the release date, unlike the seven-year gap between Photoshop 7 and Photoshop CS6.

Plans for Photoshop continue from last year’s milestone release, which delivers on Adobe’s vision of the future of the creative workflow by offering major updates across key product areas, including development of new Photoshop-native GPU APIs and tools. Through a new Adobe Air application called Share for Review, users can collaborate on projects entirely inside of Photoshop. With Share for Review, they can use any of the commands in Photoshop to group and manipulate content in several files simultaneously, share files with others and, get feedback from colleagues on exactly how to improve their work.

Share for Review enables users to manage and create files for review, preview, comment, use for an assignment or even download a finished version. When a user selects “Review Files” from the File menu in Photoshop, Share for Review shows a preview window for that file with the most common commands available in your version of Photoshop, like reorder or warp.

When a user is finished reviewing a file, they can export it to the previous state for the original document or to the local Share for Review project, and then easily invite their colleagues to review the same file in Share for Review. Let’s begin with the good news. As long as you haven’t purchased any software on the most recent update day, you will see some pretty handy features. The first of these is the new “sketch” feature for the iPad. Adobe has made much-needed improvements to the iPad app while still keeping within Apple’s guidelines. The app uses your pressure on the Apple Pencil to represent different colors, even in Photoshop images that don’t permit them to exist in color. There is a tool palette in which you can edit shapes quickly and zoom in. This and the new resizable text and filters (which work with only very few specific images) are a welcome addition. Adobe’s experiment with Sketch does not disappoint. I like the fact that it can switch from traditional to cartoonish drawings. One topic of concern I have is how the app is essentially a camera RAW solution and can’t handle RAW files. I do find that much of the software is still compatible with older Lightroom versions. Despite the fact that I prefer Lightroom, some features give me the indication that Adobe is going the “right” direction. For example, in the photo-editing process, the number of editing effects of a particular type (such as Grain, vignette and so on) is now shown as a pie chart on the left-hand screen. Perhaps, I have just been spoiled by Lightroom’s Near(Pro) Edit feature, but this Adobe implementation is an improvement. Lightroom is in many ways still a powerful application.

And this is a great thing for the user experience, not just within websites but anywhere there’s imagery and text, like in print or social media. In many cases, these new 2D graphics make it possible to maintain the aesthetics of a traditionally complex graphical display, or even more, add complexity.

There’s no question that it sets itself apart as the most powerful photo editing software available. However, with features that any beginner can learn, and features that most professional photographers can understand, Adobe Photoshop is certainly among the most powerful tools in the photo manipulation world.

There are undoubtedly specific applications that you need to complete projects at work and at home. Unfortunately, there are projects that are too big to do on a single computer. If you want to let your website or blog post recipients see each individual component in your work, create it all as a raster image and then use a resizing tool like Irfanview or Photoshop. This way, a higher quality image will load faster and your visitors will also appreciate the file size.

Photoshop makes it easy to scale a single image or a batch of images to any size while maintaining their original resolution. Overall, though, the X-Trans makes beautiful images when provided with good glass. For the money, you seriously can’t expect more than you get from Olympus. I know the mirrorless market is having some trouble right now, but if Fujifilm doesn’t think that those who buy X-Trans bodies are a big enough market to invest in RAW conversion algorithms, it’s not going to create a good product. Time will tell, and we’ll see if the X-Trans continues to gain in popularity and overtake the market share of classic fixed-lens minis. For the time being, at least, Fuji is still fighting a rear-guard action against Olympus and Nikon. For those who want to go with Sony, they should seriously consider the wonderful Sony A6000. You get a Micro Four Thirds body, one of the best interchangeable lens systems, and fantastic image quality. I’ve shot with it and it’s great.

It’s a big choice and one that is dependent on how much you need from your software for any one project. If you’re planning to run multiple variations of the same image side by side, you’re going to want at least two renditions of that image, but it’s up to you how you want to manage those assets. To make the Review & Edit panels fully collaborative, I was asked to readjust several panels to the right. I did, and they continue inline across projects. In other words, as I move a photo around in the Library, any changes I make to it will move across the other photos in the same project. The icons are as small as they have ever been, and they fit easily in the space available – even though the size of some icons can still be difficult to find (just try inverting your iPad screen or using the old-school method of holding the iPad at an angle).
